I've been in contact with Tallal Garghouti, the creator of the vmTrac virtual appliance. Of the posted trac implimentations, vmTrac seemed to be the best setup: VMWare's page, Tallal's page. For all that is good, it suffers from the same "AssertionError: Authentication information not available. " that other trac vm's have. The fix is here:
http://trac.edgewall.org/wiki/TracFastCgi but takes some work (and because the current version of vmTrac does not use apache, you need a server running apache). Real life has made it so that Tallal doesn't have much time to devote to vmTrac (updating or documentation changes) and I've offered to take it over.
We shall see what becomes of this...
